  Other University or Dept.-Sponsored Bias
  Required: Yes
  Level of Bias: Excessive
Comments: There was a required "diversity awareness" lesson in fall 2002 required for all incoming freshman and transfer students. The objective was to "Increase student awareness about racism and bias on campus." The program lasted roughly three hours. There was a short play given by a group at school (about racial discrimination), followed by the actors staying in character and answering questions from the audience for half an hour. Then the proctor led an hour and a half discussion with the audience, including a question and answer time. There are several racially segregated dorms on campus, the largest and best known of which separates African Americans from others. I was one of the few who spoke up in opposition, and the only one to be more frank. I spoke up to say the school should end state-funded racial segregation if it wants to increase diversity and student interaction. However, the program's proctor told me, in front of everyone present, that I believed in myths, there was no such thing as de-facto segregation, and that "frankly you don't know what you are talking about."
[From Cornell's Statement of Diversity (http://www.sas.cornell.edu/MEA/ome_diversity.html): "Open Doors, Open Hearts, and Open Minds" :"Cornell stands for civil discourse, reasoned thought, sustained discussion and constructive engagement without degrading, abusing, harassing, or silencing others. Cornell is committed to act responsibly and forthrightly to maintain an environment that opens doors, opens hearts and opens minds."]
